Vertical landing a rocket is hard. Like stupid, crazy hard.

I had the opportunity a while back to have drinks with some SpaceX folks. From that experience, I came away with three separate thoughts:
1) It is cool, and a bit humbling, how young and eager most of them were, and how aware they are of the challenges of some of the things they are trying.
2) Part of the reason they are focused so much on cargo right now is because none of this sort of thing would fly in a program trying to get man-rated right away.
3) When they party, they really like to party.
f86 nailed it: vertical landing is silly hard, especially when nozzle gimbaling is the primary means of control. The last major vertical landing rocket program (the LEM) used reaction controls and had much less mass and gravity to fight with. I don't personally understand the obsession with vertical landing, but have lots of confidence that, in the near future, we will be reading sensationalist Gizmodo or i09 headlines about successful landings. This new space race isn't the one I expected, but it's pretty cool.
